Ondansetron HCl (Zofran®) (optional medication – not required in every BioTel agency)

Class: Antiemetic
Route:
  • slow IV or IO push (given over 1 minute)
  • Intranasal (IN) rapid push

Adult Dose:

For nausea and/or vomiting – standing order

  • 2 mg
  • Do not exceed 4 mg cumulative dose
Pediatric Dose:

For nausea and/or vomiting – standing order

  • • 0.1 mg/Kg IV or IO
    • Do not exceed 4 mg cumulative dose
    • Ondansetron tablet (Zofran ODT) sublingually: Below 15 Kg, give 2 Mg, but don’t give to child less than 2 years old.  Above 15 Kg, give 4 Mg.
Drug Action: Selectively blocks serotonin receptors (those that produce nausea/vomiting)
Onset: Approximately 30 minutes
Duration: Approximately 9 hours
Indications: Prevention of nausea and vomiting
Precautions:
  • Is not effective in every patient
  • Patients who fail to respond to a single IV dose often do not respond to additional doses
Side Effects:
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Musculoskeletal pain
  • Drowsiness/Sedation
  • Burning sensation at the site of injection
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Do not administer to children under the age of two years
