CDC Facts About Ricin
Ricin is a poison that can be made from the waste left over from processing
castor beans. Ricin works by getting inside the cells of a person’s body and
preventing the cells from making the proteins they need. Because no antidote
exists for ricin, the most important factor is avoiding ricin exposure in the first place.

CDC Sarin Nerve Agent Site
Sarin is a human-made chemical warfare agent classified as a nerve agent.
Nerve agents are the most toxic and rapidly acting of the known chemical
warfare agents. They are similar to certain kinds of pesticides (insect killers)
called organophosphates in terms of how they work and what kind of harmful
effects they cause.


CDC Smallpox Site
Smallpox is a serious, contagious, and sometimes fatal infectious disease.
There is no specific treatment for smallpox disease, and the only prevention is
vaccination. Smallpox outbreaks have occurred from time to time for thousands
of years, but the disease is now eradicated after a successful worldwide
vaccination program. The last case of smallpox in the United States was in 1949.
The last naturally occurring case in the world was in Somalia in 1977.

The Edward Jenner Museum
Like any other doctor of the time, Edward Jenner carried out variolation to protect his
patients from smallpox. However, from the early days of his career Edward Jenner had

The Harvard Sussex Program

HSP is a long-standing collaboration between Harvard University in the

The Chemical and Biological Weapons Nonproliferation Project -

Examines the panoply of issues associated with chemical and biological weapons.
Since 1993, the project has focused on issues related to the Chemical Weapons
Convention, as well as the Biological & Toxin Weapons Convention,and issued reports
on topics including weapons destruction technologies, the utility of export controls,
terrorism involving chemical and biological weapons, and the status of chemical and
biological weapons programs in various countries. The project serves as a problem-solver
and an information clearinghouse in these general subject areas.


Stockholm International Peace Research Institute Project on Chemical and Biological Warfare

The aim of this project is to advance efforts to establish and maintain effective and fair
measures to prevent the hostile use of biological and chemical technologies, whether by
states or by terrorist and criminal organizations. The SIPRI CBW Project studies developments
relating to actual, alleged or potential uses of chemical and biological methods of warfare
and the associated weapons and technologies. The project began in the late 1960s, shortly
after the establishment of SIPRI in 1966, and is now one of the Institute's longest-running research programmes
