and abroad, providing credible information to enhance health decisions, and
promoting health through strong partnerships. CDC serves as the national
focus for developing and applying disease prevention and control, environmental

CDC would play a key role in
protecting the public health during and after an
emergency involving radiation or radioactive materials. To help people be
prepared for a radiation emergency, CDC has set up this site.
What
We Learn About Radiation Threats from Movies—Fact or Fiction
If the movie, Dirty War (HBO, January 2005), made you wonder about dirty bombs
and how to
protect
yourself and your loved ones in case of a radiation threat, this site
will direct
you to some answers.
CDC
Facts About Ricin
Ricin is a poison that can be
made from the waste left over from processing
castor beans.
Ricin works by getting inside the cells of a person’s
body and
preventing the cells from making the proteins they
need. Because no antidote
exists for ricin, the most important
factor is avoiding ricin exposure in the first place.
CDC
Sarin Nerve Agent Site
Sarin is a human-made chemical warfare agent
classified as a nerve agent.
Nerve agents are the most toxic and rapidly acting of the known chemical
warfare agents. They are similar to certain kinds of pesticides (insect killers)
called organophosphates in terms of how they work and what kind of harmful
effects they cause.
CDC
Smallpox Site
Smallpox is a serious, contagious, and sometimes
fatal infectious disease.
There is no specific treatment for smallpox disease, and the only prevention
is
vaccination. Smallpox outbreaks have occurred from time to time for thousands
of years, but the disease is now eradicated after a successful worldwide
vaccination program. The last case of smallpox in the United States was in
1949.
The last naturally occurring case in the world was in Somalia in 1977.

Center for Civilian Biodefense Strategies
The Center for Civilian Biodefense Strategies is an independent,
non-profit
organization of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the
School of Medicine. The Center works to prevent the development and use
of biological weapons, to catalyze advances in science and governance that
diminish the power of biological weapons as agents of mass lethality, and to
lessen the human suffering that would result if prevention fails.

The Chemical and Biological Weapons Nonproliferation Project
Founded in 1989, the Henry L. Stimson Center is a
nonprofit, nonpartisan
institution devoted to enhancing international
peace and security through a
unique combination of rigorous analysis
and outreach. The Chemical and
Biological Weapons
Nonproliferation Project examines the panoply of issues
associated
with chemical and biological weapons.

DEFENSE THREAT REDUCTION AGENCY
The Defense Threat Reduction Agency safeguards America's interests
from
weapons of mass destruction (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear
and high explosives) by controlling and reducing the threat and providing
quality
tools and services for the warfighter.
The
Edward Jenner Museum
Like any other doctor of the time, Edward Jenner carried
out variolation to protect his
patients from smallpox. However, from the early days of his career Edward Jenner
had
been intrigued by country-lore which said that people who caught cowpox from
their
cows could not catch smallpox. This and his own experience of variolation as
a boy
and the risks that accompanied it led him to undertake the most important research
of his life.

HSP is a long-standing collaboration between Harvard University
in the
United States and the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom that
is mediated
through SPRU. The programme undertakes research, publication and
training in
support of informed public policy on chemical/biological warfare
(CBW).
Its aim is to promote the global elimination of CBW weapons and the
strengthening
of constraints against hostile use of biomedical technologies.

Since 1993, the project has focused on issues related to the Chemical
Weapons
Convention, as well as the Biological & Toxin Weapons Convention, and
issued reports
on topics including weapons destruction technologies, the utility
of export controls,
terrorism involving chemical and biological weapons, and
the status of chemical and
biological weapons programs in various countries.
The project serves as a problem-solver
and an information clearinghouse in these
general subject areas.

Stockholm International Peace Research Institute Project on Chemical and Biological
Warfare
The aim of this project is to advance efforts to establish
and maintain effective and fair
measures to prevent the hostile use of
biological and chemical technologies, whether by
states or by terrorist
and criminal organizations. The SIPRI CBW Project studies developments
relating to actual, alleged or potential uses of chemical and biological
methods of warfare
and the associated weapons and technologies. The project
began in the late 1960s, shortly
after the establishment of SIPRI in 1966,
and is now one of the Institute's longest-running research programmes
